Gentle Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments take many forms. Some adjustments are quite vigorous, and some people prefer gentle chiropractic adjustments. Dr. James Young of Chiropractic & Wellness Center of La Grange in La Grange, IL offers whichever type of chiropractic adjustments that his patients require.

What are chiropractic adjustments?

Chiropractic adjustments are small movements in joints. Chiropractic adjustments can be done to joints in the extremities as well as in the spine. The purpose of an adjustment is to get things back into alignment.

Why get a chiropractic spinal adjustment?

Many things can cause the vertebrae in the spine to become misaligned. It can be caused by a trauma like an auto accident, but it can also result from wear and tear related to your daily activities. The brain sends out messages to all the parts of the body through the spine, and when the spine is out of alignment, it stops the free movement of the messages. The body can't function optimally if the messages aren't getting through unimpeded.

What is a gentle chiropractic adjustment?

Your chiropractor likely uses a variety of adjustment methods depending on the location of the misalignment, the patient, and the condition. Some techniques are gentler than others. Gentle chiropractic adjustment can be done manually, manually with a drop table, or with an instrument.

A gentle chiropractic adjustment does not involve any twisting of the spine and is not done at high-velocity. It uses soft stretches and light pressure. This type of adjustment usually does not produce the popping or cracking sound that some patients find disturbing.

A spring-loaded instrument can also be used to help gently move the vertebrae. The instrument produces very quick movement that moves quicker than the muscles, so it avoids the tensing that can sometimes happen.

With a drop table, a segmented table is used, and when the pressure is placed on the vertebrae, the segment drops, which allows for gentle chiropractic adjustments. This type of adjustment does produce a popping sound.  Cervical mobilization is a gentle technique that is used on the neck. This technique is used when the patient is suffering from neck pain or headaches. Talk to your chiropractor about all the adjustment techniques that they offer and which one is best for you.
